Pentecost

St Philip's Sermon 5/24/2026

This Sunday is Pentecost! We read about the first Pentecost in Acts, and we also see how Paul counsels the Corinthian church with respect to the gifts of the Spirit. God’s Spirit is living and active in the church today. We learn more about who receives the Holy Spirit and what the Spirit is used for in our time together Sunday.

The Sunday After Ascension Day

St Philip's Sermon 5/17/2026

This Sunday we talk about Christ’s ascension into heaven.  The ascension is good news for us as Christians because it completes the atonement and allows us all to know Christ more fully.  The ascension will end when Christ returns at the end of the age, but until that time comes, we are called to be Christ’s witnesses.

Rogation Sunday

St Philip's Sermon 5/10/2026

Traditionally, on Rogation Sunday, churches ask God to superintend the growth of crops recently planted.  For us, Rogation reminds us that God created us to dwell in the natural world, that we each have a vocation, and that it is good to be diligent in asking for God’s blessing over our lives and endeavors.  We’ll be studying John 15:1-11 as we meditate on these interlocking themes.

Palm Sunday

St Philip's Sermon 3/29/2026

This Sunday is Palm Sunday, the last Sunday before Easter!  On this day we remember Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem.  He is received with praises and palm branches and acclamations, but in just a few days, the hosannas will disappear, replaced with the cruel chant ‘Crucify him!’  We’ll begin our journey to Easter this week as we join the crowds following after Jesus as he makes his final approach to the Holy City.
